I was so excited to discover this beauty in my latest vintage stock.
On arrival it was a little worse for wear and needed a good clean, however I hadn't anticipated just how gorgeous it would look on completion.
The Susan Small design label ran from the early 1940s until 1978 and so there is a possibility that this dress dates back to the sixties - I've guessed early seventies judging by the collar shape and overall design.
The leather is a vibrant royal blue and the dress has been nicely panelled, shaping around the bust and nipped in at the waist. The armholes did gape a little on my mannequin because it doesn't give like the female form, it would be a snug size 10 fit. The original front zipper is 21" / 53.5cm long opening from the neck edge to hip height. I had initially thought the two additional zippers on the front chest were pockets but no...they zip open!
The large collar has a rounded edge which hints at it's early 70s heritage. From the waist the skirt is panelled and falls to an A line shape.
Due to coronavirus restrictions I was unable to get this professionally cleaned and given the state it arrived in decided there was only one way to get it clean, hand washing. As mentioned, it has come up really well as you can see from photographs. Measurements: Underarm to underarm 16" / 41cm approx 32" / 81.5cm chest Shoulder to shoulder 14" / 35.5cm
