This 1970s shirt was obviously well loved as there were already signs of it having been repaired, however, this had meant that it had been left on the shelf and destined now for landfill. It is my job to recover damaged vintage and breathe new life into it.
In this case, quite a few of the popper covers had rusted and therefore needed covering, which I did with a 1960s floral tie. I also used a flower from the same tie to cover over a mark on the collar. Adjacent to this just below the left shoulder you will see the work Repaired embroidered in complimenting colours over another previous mend.
The shirt is long sleeved, the right sleeve has an embroidered ReCreate patch over a mark and I've left one of the popper cuff fasteners with the rusting around - a hint to it's past.
Another previous mend can be seen on the right hem split, I like to incorporate these as it once again shows that the shirt was loved enough to repair.
The lower back of the shirt features applique lettering which has been created from vintage fabrics salvaged from other upcycled garments - I have many... The wording, NOT MY THING is a statement about sustainable fashion. So often I'm complimented on the upcycled designs I create but, regardless of their artistic appeal, they aren't everyone's wardrobe choice. I am hoping this will find its way to someone who can give it that forever home - love not landfill.Measurements:
